Gion Tsujiri was founded in 1860 as a tea manufacturer in Uji. It was primarily called “Tsujiri” from the name of the founder, Tsuji Riemon.

Heritage & History

It was the end of the ancient Edo period, which also marked the start of the brand TSUJIRI that was first established by Riemon Tsuji in Uji, Kyoto, Japan, whom tapped his own wealth to improve the tea industry, advancing the method to enhance the flavors and sweetness producing the highest quality Gyokuro tea leaves.

1860

Founded Tsujiri Chaho

At the age of 17, Riemon Tsuji first established TSUJIRI at the end of Japan’s Edo period in Uji, Kyoto.

1868

The Birth of an Unmatched Flavor

Through meticulous innovation, Riemon Tsuji elevated Gyokuro to new heights. By perfecting the kneading process for shaping the leaves, he unlocked a deeper layer of umami (rich, savory sweetness) and kaori (aromatic complexity). 

1889

Invented Chabitsu

Riemon Tsuji invented “Chabitsu”, by coating the interior of wooden cabinet with tin, a highly crystalline silvery-white metal which prevents oxidation and resists corrosion from moisture, enabled fresh tea leaves transporting from Kyoto to other cities in Japan.

Established TSUJIRICHAHO next to Ichikawa Tokiwa Bridge

The Kokura branch, TSUJIRICHAHO, was then established next to Ichikawa Tokiwa Bridge which was the starting point of old Nagasaki street in the Edo period.

1933

Construction of the Statue of Riemon Tsujiri

In Kyoto’s World Heritage Temple in honor of his contribution to the Japanese tea industry.

1946

Established Uomachi Shop

1947

Opened Tsujiri Main Shop in Kyomachi Shop District

1956

Established TSUJIRICHAHO Ltd.

1993

Traditionally, tea shops only serve and sell teas. leaves. Tsujiri pioneered a cafe corner and serve soft serve in the tea shop itself.

2010

Established the First Overseas Store in Taiwan

TSUJIRI CHAHO has opened the first overseas store in Taipei, Republic of Taiwan. We aim to promote Japanese tea to be enjoyed on a daily basis.

2012 – 2018

Tsujiri Start Making it's Mark Internationally by Establishing it's First Stores All Over The World

Throughout the years, Tsujiri expands to Singapore, China, Australia, Hongkong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, UK, Philippines, and New Zealand.
